Assimil German review.

About Assimil German.

It can be said that Assimil courses are more popular in Europe since they are made by a company that is French based. The whole teaching method of Assimil was developed by Alphonse Cheral in 1929. Since this method is quite old already there are also quite a lot foreign languages that Assimil is available in; however it is important to mention that English speakers can only choose from ten different languages.

The most popular German series from Assimil is called German With Ease and it is aimed at complete beginners of this language. This edition of the course contains one coursebook that comes together with 4 audio CD’s. There are a total of 100 lessons included in this book and you can expect to learn basic grammar rules and about 2000-3000 German words from them. A typical lesson of Assimil provides learners with a dialogue in German in one side of the page and translation to English together with explanations on the other side of the page. By completing all material included in this course learners can expect to achieve high-intermediate level (B2) at German language.

The other thing to know about Assimil is that there are two phases in the book – First Wave and Second Wave. The first 50 lessons in the book follow First Wave, which means that you will only need to read and listen to the dialogues. The other 50 lessons follow Second Wave, which means that in addition to reading and listening to the dialogues there are also workouts and reviews of previous lessons provided. So it can be said that Second Wave is more active phase since it can help to enhance retention of new German vocabulary and improve learning efficiency in general.

What Do Consumer Reviews Say?

In general it can be said that Assimil has quite positive feedback no matter which language you might choose to study. Most people compliment Assimil since it provides learners with a lot of new vocabulary that is useful in everyday situations and it is also a very intuitive course that works effectively for teaching German grammar and language structure naturally.

One of the most common complaints from users of this course is that there is only one level available for German language (German-English) and more advanced levels are created only for native French speakers. Read a few actual consumer reviews of Assimil German bellow.

Review of The Main Pros and Cons.

Main Pros:

  • Since Assimil includes both visual and audio material to study German from, it is a suitable course for different types of learners;
  • One very useful feature of Assimil is that it highlights letters in the words that needs to be stressed. Due to this you will be able to learn how to say German words correctly;
  • Dialogues provided by Assimil are quite practical so all the words and phrases that you can learn from them will be useful while taking part in conversation;
  • You can learn quite a lot of new German vocabulary in each lesson of Assimil and there are 100 lessons included in the book;
  • Speakers in the audio CD’s are native so you will learn proper German pronunciation. Also since they talk at a speed, which is common for native German speakers, you can get used to real life conversations;
  • Assimil will not provide you with boring grammar rules, instead you will be able to understand how German language works and its grammar through different conversations;
  • It can be said that Assimil does a great job at immersing you into German since there are not too much explanations or English language in this course. This is quite a useful feature of these lessons since it forces you to think in your target language more, which in turn leads to higher learning efficiency;
  • In most cases it is enough to dedicate one hour of your time daily in order to complete one lesson of Assimil German, so it is kind of a suitable course for busy learners. If you can keep up with this kind of schedule you will be able to complete the whole course within 3 month time;
  • Unlike some other courses, Assimil teaches you the whole German sentences instead of separate words, which is another strength of this course;
  • There is little guessing involved with this course, since each lesson provides notes in English explaining new concepts that are being used in the dialogues;

Main Cons:

  • There is only one part of Assimil German available for English speakers so the level you can achieve with this course is quite limited;
  • Even though there are audio CD’s included, Assimil is not very convenient course to study German while on the go since you would need to have a book around;
  • You need to be motivated in order to continue with Assimil German, since dialogues are not very engaging at times. Also it is worthwhile to mention Assimil book doesn’t include colorful photos, which can be seen as a downside by some learners;
  • Although Assimil provides learners with some culture information, it can be said that it doesn’t compare to German culture lessons provided by programs like Rocket;
  • Considering the fact that Assimil offers one book and 4 audio CD’s it can be said that it is not the cheapest available course for learning German (~$125 for German with Ease). Courses like Living Language offers 3 books and 9 audio CD’s and it’s priced even lower (~$50 for Complete edition);
  • Since Assimil is made by a French based company this course is not that well-known in USA, so it is not that easy to find where to buy it from;

Summary of a Review.

To conclude this review it can be said that Assimil offers quite a solid course for learning German or any other foreign language. One of the main strengths of these lessons is that they teach new language through sentences (rather than separate words), which allows you to notice patterns in your target language. It can be also said that this method does a great job at immersing you into German language; however there are also sufficient English explanations provided in order to understand everything that you are learning. The other strength of Assimil is that each lesson provides learners with quite a lot of new vocabulary that is practical and can be used in real life situations.

Despite all these mentioned benefits it can be said that Assimil is not very engaging course so you need to be a motivated German learner in order to continue with it. Also this course doesn’t include any advanced features that would help you to study while on the go (like apps or online material), so it might be not best choice program for busy learners.
